December 02, 2013

The SBM Charitable Foundation has granted $28,731 to the Windham Hospital Foundation to create and implement a sustainable, school-based Nutrition/Exercise program for students at the Capt. Nathan Hale Middle School in Coventry and the Mansfield Middle School in Mansfield.

Windham Hospital Nutritionists will collaborate with school staff to create the Nutrition / Exercise curriculum for the 2013-2014 school year. The multidisciplinary team will consist of hospital dietitians, school nurses, physical education teachers and health teachers. The program aims to slow or halt weight gain in middle school students through increased physical activity, dietary management and behavior modification. Students will walk a marathon (26.2 miles) during the school year.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this type of program to our students,” stated Dena DeJulius, Principal Capt. Nathan Hale Middle School in Coventry, CT.

The SBM Charitable Foundation is committed to improving the lives of individuals and families living and working predominantly East of the River in Hartford, Tolland and Windham Counties.
